Do Landowners Need Insurance to Host ATV and Dirt Bike Riders?

By Traqhunter ·

Quick answer

Yes. Traqhunter doesn't provide insurance, so hosts need their own liability coverage before hosting riders, and riders should carry their own insurance. Every rider also signs Traqhunter's motorsport waiver. Ask your insurance agent about coverage for paid recreational use of your land.

Does Traqhunter provide insurance?

No. Traqhunter is a marketplace for private motorsport land rentals. It connects riders and landowners, but doesn't insure either one. See the insurance page for full details.

What insurance do hosts need?

Traqhunter's Terms require hosts to carry:

  • Liability coverage (for example commercial general liability, or a farm/ranch policy with the right endorsement).
  • Coverage that applies to fee-based recreational use, including ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes and 4x4s, with no motorized-vehicle exclusion.

A standard homeowner or farm policy may not cover paid motorsport guests. Ask your agent to confirm in writing.

What should I ask my insurance agent?

  • Does my policy cover people paying to ride ATVs, UTVs or dirt bikes on my land?
  • What are the liability limits?
  • Do I need a separate commercial or event policy?
  • Are there rules I must follow, like signed waivers or marked boundaries?

What should riders carry?

Riders should have their own insurance for themselves and their machines. Hosts can remind riders of this in their house rules.

Do waivers replace insurance?

No. Every rider signs Traqhunter's motorsport waiver before paying, but a waiver is not insurance. Hosts still need their own coverage.

How can I lower risk on my land?

  • Mark boundaries and no-go areas.
  • Set clear rules: vehicles, speed, hours, rider limits.
  • Walk the trails for hazards before guests arrive.
  • Limit vehicle types to what your land handles well.

FAQ

Can I host riders without insurance?

Traqhunter's terms require hosts to carry their own liability insurance. Hosting without it puts you at risk.

Does my state have a recreational use law?

Many states have recreational use laws that limit landowner liability, but they often don't apply when you charge a fee. Ask a local attorney or your insurance agent.

Will Traqhunter help with a claim?

Traqhunter doesn't provide insurance, so claims go through your own insurer.
